Do You Really Need to Get Rid of Your Russian Accent?

Katsiaryna · EFFL6 min read

Many Russian speakers are ashamed of their accent and chase a 'native' sound. That is the wrong goal. What matters is being clearly understood — and a few specific sounds, not your whole accent, are what actually cause problems.

Intelligibility, not imitation

The goal is intelligibility: can people understand you without effort? A strong accent that is clear is far better than a 'neutral' mumble. Native-level accent is neither realistic nor necessary.

The sounds that actually matter

A handful of sounds cause most misunderstandings for Russian speakers: the 'th' pair, short vs long vowels (ship/sheep), and the 'w/v' distinction. Fix these and clarity jumps.

Word stress changes meaning

English is stress-timed; put the stress on the wrong syllable and the word can become unrecognisable. Learning stress patterns often improves clarity more than fixing individual sounds.

Confidence beats perfection

A confident speaker with an accent is understood and respected. A hesitant one chasing perfection is not. Owning your accent while being clear is the professional sweet spot.
