Small Talk in English: The Skill Russian Speakers Underestimate
To many Russian speakers, small talk feels fake or pointless. In English-speaking business culture it is the opposite: it is how trust is built before any real business happens. Here is how to do it well.
Why it is not a waste of time
Small talk is the relationship layer under every deal. Skipping it signals coldness. Two minutes of light conversation can decide whether the serious part goes smoothly.
Safe topics vs landmines
Safe: weekend, travel, food, the city, sport, work projects. Avoid: politics, religion, salary, personal money, age, appearance. When in doubt, ask a light question and listen.
The FORD method
When you run out of things to say, remember FORD: Family, Occupation, Recreation, Dreams. Each opens a natural, polite line of questions that keeps conversation flowing.
Exit gracefully
Ending small talk is a skill too. 'It was great chatting — I should let you get back to it' closes warmly without awkwardness. Prepare two exit lines in advance.
